28th Mar, 2011

Recognizing the importance of educating truckers who play an eminent role in the supply chain, SABMiller India launched project ‘Humsafar’ at HBL, their award winning brewery at Sonepat. The primary focus of the program is to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS among the truckers who are identified as one of the key target group. The program will spread message by way of interpersonal activities such as group discussions, distribution of free IEC material, condom demonstrations, one-on-one sessions and talk shows. The program is aimed at engaging truckers and ensuring their active participation.

Sundeep Kumar, Director-Corporate Affairs and Communications, SABMiller India said, “HIV/AIDS is a key component of SABMiller`s Sustainable Development framework. We at SABMiller India recognize the threats of HIV/AIDS to the most productive segment of the work force and have taken several initiatives to educate them and our partners in this respect. Project ‘Humsafar’ helps truckers to learn about HIV/AIDS through interpersonal communication and helps to address the issue by enduring prevention through knowledge and information dissemination.”

Speaking at the occasion Dr JS Pooniya, CMO Haryana State AIDS Control Society (HSACS) stressed about the importance of being aware and informed about the various ways that lead to HIV/AIDS. He highlighted that unprotected sex with an individual suffering from AIDS is the number one cause in India that has led to the spread of this disease. Dr Pooniya also emphasized on the need to demystify the myths released with HIV/AIDS.

‘Humsafar’ was first launched in 2008 at the Rochess Brewery, Neemrana in partnership with Humana, a Rajasthan based NGO and Rajasthan State Aids Control Society The program was later expanded to Mysore breweries in Karnataka and SICA in Pondicherry. As part of the company’s ongoing initiative the program is envisaged to be expanded to all the SABMiller India breweries. Through concerted efforts, in a short span of time, the project has managed to sensitize employees, truckers and labourers, etc. The programme so far has reached to 9800 truckers through one to one and group discussions, 6050 condoms have been disbursed through social marketing. The programme has referred 450 truckers to civil hospital and nearby Integrated Counseling and Testing Centres and 4980 truckers have been reached through street plays, movies, etc.
