SABMiller India, lndia's leading brewing company rolled out AIDS awareness programme, Humsafar in partnership with Humana, a Rajasthan based NGO and Rajasthan State Aids Control Society. Humsafar, is the pilot project being launched in the Rochees Breweries, Neemrana. This marks the beginning of the second phase of the HIV/AIDS which was started in 2007 in partnership with International Labour Organization (ILO).
The current social economic factors looming in Rajasthan have shown increase of HIV infection in last two years, highlighting the need for an organized effort to control the contamination of the disease and also the importance of concrete structure to be built for People Living with HIV/AIDS. Rajasthan State AIDS control Society and Officials of Humana were present.
As a part of its numerous initiatives, SABMiller India and Humana have chalked out a programme to spread AIDS awareness amongst the truckers in Neemrana. The programme will provide interpersonal communication on contribution an individual can make to keep HIV/AIDs under control with the motivational message ‘Aoo milkar AIDS se lade’. The programme would include infotainment mediums like HIV message on playing cards, movie screenings on AIDS, street plays etc.
Humana has been initiating development programmes since last 10 years. Sentinel Surveillance was conducted in 703 sites across the country, and it was observed that out of the estimated adults living with HIV, 38.4% were females, 57% were of rural background. Following which, the main objective of the project is to reach the right target groups.
Mr. Sundeep Kumar, Director Corporate Affairs, SABMiller India said “These programmes rreiterate the need to spread awareness messages amongst our employees and supply chains, considering the substantial ‘HIV prevalence’ reported from the villages during the last few years. We must join together to make sure that HIV prevention, testing and treatment reach all rural and urban areas. Together we can stop the spread of this epidemic”
According to the Mr Surya Prakash, Project Coordinator, Humana People to People “Project proposes to give focused approach to migrant population in and around the strategic business unit, Rochees in Neemrana and incoming truckers to Rochees breweries. Through project Humsafar efforts would be streamlined towards creating awareness about HIV/AIDS amongst the truckers and also providing referrals to the nearby Integrated Counseling and Testing Centers (ICTC).
SABMiller India has been regularly taking initiatives to support the communities around its breweries. Rochees Breweries has been conducting numerous activities such as Blood Donation Camps, Polio Drives, activities marking World AIDS Day for the overall betterment of the employees and the communities in which we are operating.
