Our History

SABMiller entered the Indian market in the year 2000 by acquiring Narang breweries, and went on to expand much more since then. The most notable acquisition has been with Mysore Breweries (Knock Out) in 2001 and Shaw Wallace (Royal Challenge & Haywards) in 2003.

The Journey:

Year 2000-01:

  • Entered in July 2000 with JV and later acquired Narang Breweries (UP)
Sabmiller Can
Year 2002:
  • Launched Castle in Delhi from Himneel Breweries (contract brewery)
  • Acquired Mysore Breweries (MBL) with 2 breweries in west and south
  • Rolled out Knock Out nationally
Year 2003
  • Acquired Rochees Breweries in February
  • Formed JV with Shaw Wallace, later acquired
Year 2006
  • Acquired Fosters India
Year 2007
  • Launched Peroni Nastro Azzurro, a premium Italian brand, one of the top fifteen beer brands in the world in select cities.
Year 2011
  • Launched the iconic American beer, Miller High Life and introduced the strong variants of Foster’s in key states across the country and Royal Challenge Strong in South India
Year 2012
  • Launched Indus Pride, India’s specialty beer brewed with authentic Indian spices in four variants- Citrusy Coriander, Citrusy Cardamom, Spicy Fennel and Fiery Cinnamon
Year 2014
  • Repositioned Foster’s around extra-cold refreshment backed with a temperature sensitive label, “extra-cold” marketing communication and a brew that provides a ‘refreshing’ experience to Indian consumers. We also renamed Foster’s Strong into Foster’s Gold.
  • Launched Miller Ace in the Indian Market - premium strong beer variant of the internationally acclaimed Miller beers franchise
Year 2015
  • Launched the new Haywards 5000 Bold beer that has been crafted with care and brewed for 48 hours longer, delivering a consistent BOLD flavor with a richer, full-bodied taste. It’s a classic strong beer brewed using select malts and premium hops.
Year 2016
  • Launched refreshed Foster’s with a new tagline of Extra Cold Refreshment. The new Foster’s connotes premium cues and refreshment encompassing: Ring-pull cap, new proprietary bottle shape, new label and can design, thermo-chromatic element on our labels and cans with a snowflake design that changes color with the temperature of the beer and shows consumers when the beer is extra-cold and most refreshing
